The guards immediately panicked when they saw their companion hit the floor, pointing their guns straight at Cole in a vain attempt to intimidate him. The scientists scrambled towards the door, some tripping over their own feet as they fought to get through and keep hold of their clipboards. One of the guards lowered his gun so that it was aimed at Cole's legs, and fired. The bullet didn't even make a dent, and all colour drained from the guard's face. "Seal the area!" one guard bellowed, backing away from Cole and Clark and trying to follow the scientists out of the door. "Stop them from escaping, do something!" They started firing blindly at Cole, ignoring Clark completely.

"Clark, just stay out of the way," Cole instructed quickly. As he said it he bent down to the unconscious guard and picked up the gun that he had dropped when he collapsed. The corner of his mouth quirked up into a bemused smirk as the guards tried to shoot him. He aimed his own newly acquired gun at one of the guards, hoping it would scare them enough that they might stop and flee, leaving the path clear for Clark and Cole to escape.

"Silas Almaras. I hope it goes without saying that I am disappointed. Three of my staff dead, and you directly defying my orders. You're stepping dangerously close to the line here. Whether or not you've crossed it depends entirely on whether Oryn can explain what was going on, and whether or not he has a reasonable explanation for why he allowed you to drive. Now if you'll excuse me." He left Silas there, and made his way back out to the waiting room, where he sought out one of the doctors. "Tell me when Oryn Gyvres wakes up. I need to speak with him." "Yes, sir." Somewhat satisfied, he settled down in the otherwise empty waiting room and took out the notes on his annual address, scanning and editing them as he waited for his employee to regain consciousness.
Oryn became aware of the happenings around him by degrees. First the pain, then the fact that there were people around him, then the hospital bed he was lying in, the various medical apparatuses attached to him... He realised there was someone standing over him, and he blinked a few times, focusing in on the face of an older doctor who sported a grizzled beard. "Hello," the doctor said, altogether too cheerfully in Oryn's opinion. "Can you tell me your name?" "Oryn Gyvres." Speaking was surprisingly painful, and Oryn wondered if he had a collapsed lung. "And your age?" "Twenty." "Do you remember what happened just before you hit the truck?" "We were being pursued by the military staff... they shot out our tires and Silas turned into the truck..." The doctor seemed pleased with his answers, and turned to the young intern next to him, who seemed to have calmed down now that the patient had regained consciousness. "He's alert, and a very lucky man to have suffered no brain damage in a crash like that. The emperor wishes to interview him, so why don't you go fetch him?" The panicked look returned to the intern's face, but he managed to nod and back out of the room to search for the emperor. Oryn was momentarily confused. The emperor wanted to talk with him already? And he was here to do so? Since when did he visit hospitals?
Shirune glanced up idly when the intern appeared and stammered out a respectful "he's awake now, sir". "I'll be there momentarily," he replied, putting away his papers and following the intern through the hospital corridors to Oryn's room. "You can go in, sir." Shirune did not acknowledge the intern, but entered and, after a cursory glance about, pulled up a chair next to Oryn's bed. "I have Silas's version of events. I want yours. Can you start from your arrival at the military outpost? You were driving originally, I assume?" "I was driving. We got there... didn't see anyone... went inside to get your things for the address... When we came out... there was a group of soldiers... with their guns trained on us..." Oryn paused, trying to catch his breath. "So you were under threat?" "We were. We tried to explain... who we were... but they refused to listen... they started firing..." "They started firing without checking for identity?" "They did. I tried... to reason with them... but they kept firing... so we ran... back to the car..." "And at this point Silas took the wheel?" "They were firing at us... we didn't have time to... ensure I was driving..." Shirune made a slight noise, and Oryn glanced over at him. "Continue," the emperor said. "We drove away... Silas kept accelerating... they pursued us... shot out our tires... we ran into the truck and the car flipped." "I see. Do you remember anything else directly following the accident?" "I know Silas got out... of the car. The next thing I recall... was the emergency team getting there... then waking up here." Shirune jotted down a few notes. "So when he got out of the car, do you suppose he went to harm the military members who had been pursuing you?" "Probably." "Interesting." He glanced at his watch. "It's late, and now that I've interviewed you, I'll be heading back to headquarters. Get some rest, I'll see you later." Oryn didn't reply, and after chatting briefly with the doctors Shirune left the room, to his relief. The doctor then approached Oryn. "If you're feeling up to it, do you want to see Silas?" "If he wants to come in here." It didn't particularly matter to Oryn, but he didn't think he would mind company, even Silas's company. It would take his mind off the fact that he was lying here injured, with very little else to entertain him.

Silas watched Shirune leave, hitting his head against the wall and cursing the Emperor to hell. You're stepping dangerously close to the line. Ever since he had been in Shirune's employment, he had seen how far he could stretch the rules before he faced any sort of punishment, but he had always been careful. He had known where Shirune had drawn the line, and had learnt what he could get away with. But the thought of overthrowing the Emperor was too tempting - he was being more careless than he usually was, and had been involved in more incidents than he usually was. He had already had his license taken away, and was supposed to be supervised at all times... and he was convinced that Shirune thought that both of these disciplinary measures had failed. What would Shirune do to him now? He abruptly remembered the pain-measuring experiments that had occurred so very long ago - the drugs that they had hidden in his food that weakened him enough for him to be unable to escape. No matter what he had done in the past, they had not tried to torture him. Yet. He wondered if they'd try to make him feel guilty by torturing some stranger for his misdeeds, but he doubted it. Shirune could probably already guess that the particular method wouldn't have much effect. He punished Oryn for failing to kill one person, he remembered. I killed three and managed to get around both previous punishments. "The world just isn't fair," he moaned, staring at the ceiling in despair. "Mr Almaras? Mr Gyvres is awake. Do you want to visit him?" Silas groaned in despair again, and the doctor gave him an odd look. "I'll tell him no then." "No," Silas said, sitting up slowly and ignoring the slight pain in his ribs when he did so, "I'll go and see him. I owe him that, I think." At least by seeing Oryn he could try to push Shirune to the back of his mind.
"Hey Oryn," Silas said as he pushed the door open, "I heard you were-" he paused when he saw just how battered Oryn was, "-alive." He turned away from Oryn to glare at the doctor, and his eyes quickly had the desired effect as the doctor scurried out of the room. He glanced back at Oryn, staring at the bandages in silence before he noticed something else and snorted. "I can't believe you let them get you in that stupid dress. I know you were unconscious, but still..." He threw himself down into the chair at Oryn's bedside, the same chair that Shirune had been in not too long ago. "I hate hospitals," he said idly, grimacing at the painted blue walls. "Last time I was in one they refused to treat me. Humans are so stupid and bigoted..." He paused. "I met Luci in a hospital," he added. "She's a doctor, y'know. A really crappy one, but a doctor nevertheless. Although, saying that, she did manage to treat Ceil... and still looks after him..." He shrugged, continuing before Oryn could question him about Ceil or Lucielle. "I'm sorry about the crash," he said, and surprised himself when he realised that the words were actually genuine. "Even though it wasn't my-" He sighed. "...It was my fault. I shouldn't have been driving. You would have kept your head, and I can't see straight. I'm sorry that you got hurt." He averted his gaze, tugging at the bandages around his hands. "Did you know that some humans are so useless that they're actually allergic to painkillers?"
The guards froze when they saw Cole with the gun, and others desperately started running towards the door. The guard with the gun being pointed at him put up his hands, backing away slowly with wide eyes. There was a sudden blaring as one of the guards who had escaped raised the alarm, and the lights overhead began flashing red. He turned and tried to run out of the room, hoping that Cole would be unable to drag the still-weak Clark out of the room and manage to get past the guards before the experimentation sector was cut off.

Cole scowled as the alarms started going off. That couldn't be good. "Clark, do you think you have enough strength to make it out of here?" "Don't worry about me, of course I can make it," Clark mumbled even as he tried to push himself to his feet. He didn't make it far before he staggered and nearly collapsed again before catching himself on a table in the room. "I'm fine," he asserted stubbornly. Cole simply sighed and shook his head. "We need a new plan." Then, a moment later, "Clark, try and wake that guard up, okay?" he said, motioning to the one unconscious guard left behind by his companions. Clark frowned a little. "First you knock him out and now you want me to wake him back up?" "Just do it, Clark." With that Cole moved to the door, carefully glancing both ways down the hallway at the still retreating guards before he pulled his head back inside and shut the door behind him. He braced himself against the door in case any guards tried to push back inside and then looked over to where Clark was trying to shake the guard awake and aimed his gun. He was ready to fire if the guard tried anything at all.

"Have I ever mentioned how much I hate Silas?" Lucielle growled as she continued to try to get the mud out of the couch cushions. "You have, yes," Ceil replied half-heartedly, sitting on the other chair and flicking through the channels on the TV. "Do you know if I'm close to the cartoon channel?" "I'll put it on for you in a minute," she said, and sighed angrily. "I give up. He can pay for another couch." Ceil smirked and offered Luci the remote. She was about to change the channel when she frowned. "Is that a car crash?" she said, sitting down. "It looks bad..." "-Emperor himself has been found at the hospital, visiting the injured staff members. Their pictures cannot be released to the public for private reasons, but the names of those injured in the crash are Oryn Gyvres and Silas Almaras, both whom are in stable conditions in the hospital. Three were also reported to have died in the crash. More on this story when it emerges." "Luci-" Ceil began. "Shirune never visits injured staff," she said, staring at the television screen with wide eyes. "Stable, that means nothing! That doesn't say how serious it is, it just means they're OK for the moment! He could-" "Luci, calm down," Ceil said. "He'll be fine. Besides, I thought that you hated him..." "Shut up, Ceil! Don't you know what this means? Shirune doesn't visit people through the kindness of his heart. Silas and Oryn are plotting a rebellion. What if the crash was on purpose, and he's going there to make sure they've learnt their lesson?" Ceil turned his head in her general direction, his expression blank. "You're being ridiculous. You know how bad Silas is at driving, don't you? It'll have been his fault." "But what if it's not?" She stood, glancing at the screen before moving to the door. "I have to see him." "Luci, think about this!" Ceil called after her. "You don't even know where he is. He's not in any danger, calm down. Just... just text him later. He'll be fine." She paused with her hand on the door, and she sighed. She turned around, and caught sight of a piece of paper lying on top of the shoerack by the door. The handwriting was barely legible, but she was used to Silas's messy scrawl and terrible spelling. Atom's numbr, if you change youre mind. She took out her phone and dialled the number he had left. I have to do something. "Atom," she said once she had picked up. "My name's Lucielle... and I want to join you. Can we meet and talk about this?"
The guard slowly returned to consciousness, and looked around in confusion as he registered the flashing lights and the sound of the alarms. But he froze when he saw the gun floating in midair, pointed straight at him. "W-what's going on?" he demanded, reaching for his gun and paling when he realised that it was the one in the enemy's hands. "What do you think you're doing?!"

"Clark?" Cole asked, and when Clark nodded, he spoke and Clark relayed what he said to the guard. "We're taking you as a hostage, and you're going to escort us out of here safely. And if you're thinking about saying no, than you might want to consider the fact that we're the ones with the gun now, and not you."

Oryn attempted to smile, but the result was more of a grimace of pain. "Yeah..." He was surprised by Silas's apology, but tried not to show it too much. A nurse entered, with a tentative glance at Silas, and hurried to Oryn's bedside to readjust some of the equipment and check his vitals before hurrying back towards the door. "Ma'am?" The nurse turned back to look at him. "Do you need anything, Mr. Gyvres?" "The doctors were talking... with Shirune... I heard something about the news...?" "Ah, yes. The crash is being mentioned on the news. It'll be in the paper tomorrow. Is that all you wanted to know?" "Yeah, thanks. You can go now." With his dismissal, she hurried out of the room, looking relieved to no longer be in Silas's presence. Oryn sighed and closed his eyes for a long time before speaking to Silas. "Great. He visits us, shows concern... he's the good guy... in the public's eye. And he gets... the entire empire to follow our story... which makes operating in secret harder... and I'm injured... The emperor has just made it... exponentially harder to overthrow him, hasn't he?"

Atom was out in the town when her phone rang. She still wasn't used to having a phone and it startled her. She answered it hurriedly, hurrying away from where anyone might listen in. The only people who knew her number were people who might seem suspicious calling her.
"Hello?" she said.
"Atom, my name's Lucielle... and I want to join you. Can we meet and talk about this?"
For a moment Atom hesitated. The only people who had her number were Silas and Oryn. She hadn't given her number to anyone else. So they must have given her number to this Lucielle. In which case she might be kind of safe to meet and talk to.
"Sure, she said. "How about we meet at the Stanton park at midday tomorrow?"

Silas smirked. "I wouldn't say that. You may be injured, but you'll recover. And no one expects someone who's injured to be of any threat... trust me on that." He leaned back on the chair, glancing at the door. "Besides, even if our names are broadcast all over the empire, my face won't be. The Emperor wouldn't want some little humans getting scared, after all. So I can still do whatever I want." His smirk faded slightly. "Until Shirune catches me, that is. I'll have to be a bit more careful... But we still have his address to ruin. That'll be fun. And I'm pretty sure you can still do something, even if you're practically useless."
"Stanton park?" Lucielle repeated, trying to remember where the place was. "Alright, I think I know where that is. Thank you, Atom. I'll see you tomorrow." She hung up and stared at the phone for a few moments, trying to accept that she had really just committed herself to Silas's insane plan. She heard Ceil laughing in the other room, and she went over to him. "What's so funny?" she asked. "You are." He paused, looking in her general direction. When he spoke, his tone was serious. "I thought you hated Silas." "I do. But I don't want him to die. Which he might do if he's on his own, because he's so terrible at subtlety." "What do you really think you can accomplish, Luci? We're hiding from Shirune, remember? We might not look like nons, but if we start gathering attention-" "We?" Luci repeated, looking at him in surprise. Ceil grinned. "You can go visit Atom all by yourself, but you're not leaving me out of this." Lucielle smiled back. "Wouldn't dream of it."
The guard narrowed his eyes at Clark and Cole. "I would rather die than betray the Emperor," he said. "Go on, shoot me. I'll never help you filthy non humans escape!"

Atom was starting to have her doubts about meeting this Lucielle. She was, after all, basing her trust of this person off the fact that she'd most likely know Silas and Oryn, which wasn't much of a recommendation really, considering her confused feelings about them and whether or not she should trust them comoletely. But she had promised to try and work against Shirune, and tis was an opportunity dropped in her lap. She'd be a fool not to take it.
So here she was, just before midday, at Stanton Park. She sat on the edge of the fountain, watching the water spray out of the statues in the middle. Foumtains were interesting things. She didn't remember seeing them before, and she'd discovered that she quite liked watching them.
But she wasn,t just here for pleasure. She checked the time on her phone. Almost midday. Lucielle would be here soon...

Lucielle looked around the park, suddenly very anxious. What if they couldn't reach an agreement? What if Silas had said something that made Atom hate her before they had even met? What if they couldn't do anything? Worry won't get you anywhere, she reminded herself. You've agreed to go and see her. You can't back out of it now. She saw a girl sitting on the edge of a fountain, and recognised her. Dark hair, taller than Silas. The girl who had stolen the phone and had put Silas's number in it. She had forgotten about her until now, and sighed heavily before walking over to the fountain. This can't get any more awkward... "Um... Atom?" She started playing with her hair absently, sitting down on the edge of the fountain as well while making sure that none of the water landed on her. "My name's Lucielle... I'm Silas's friend." She wasn't sure if that was true or not, but it was far easier to say that then try to explain their exact relationship. She lowered her voice, looking at the water just in case there were any cameras nearby that could pick up what she was saying. She doubted Silas had been lying when he said they were everywhere... "I want to get rid of Shirune too, and Silas told me that I should contact you."

Atom looked up, and her heart sank. Of all the people Lucielle could have been, she had to be the one person who'd realised that Atom had stolen that phone. The phone that she now slid away into her jacket pocket. No sense bringing that up again. But how...awkward.
"Hi Lucielle," she said, trying to act like they'd never talked about stolen phones before. Now that she came to think of it, sitting by the fountain had been a great idea. No one would be able to hear what they were saying. "So Silas told to you call me if you wanted to get involved with the plan. How much did he tell you about this plan?" She darted a quick look around to make sure no one could overhear them. Better safe than dead.

"Shirune's address... right. I think that's... what? Four or five days from now? That doesn't give us much time..." He thought for a minute, trying to remember how Shirune's annual addresses usually went. "They'll have him come out while the anthem plays... it wouldn't be too hard to get into the computer system and ensure that the anthem is interrupted... or even start playing the old anthem, from before Shirune took over..." That could work, he thought. It would remind everyone in the Empire over forty of the time before Shirune's reign. "You should probably call Lucielle sometime soon and tell her you're alright," he added quietly.

Silas was about to tell him about any other ideas that he had, but he frowned at Oryn immediately. "Why should I?" he said defensively. "She won't give a damn. In fact, her and Ceil will probably throw a party as soon as they hear I've been in a crash. They'll think I've finally got what I deserve..." He paused for a moment before shrugging. "I'll let them think whatever they want. It'll make disappointing them more worthwhile." He thought back to all of the addresses that he had seen Shirune give, remembering the anthem that Oryn had already mentioned and the bright flags adorning the stage that rolled down at the moment which would provide the maximum effect. "We could mess with the flags... like writing something across them in blood, or red paint. Like evil, or murderer, or tyrant... something to get the point across, get people thinking. I could swap them with the real flags during the plans, after any rehearsals... It wouldn't take too much effort. Can you think of anything-" He finally noticed the plaster covering Oryn's leg and stared at it for a moment before looking up at Oryn. "I really hope that you don't think I'm pushing you around in a wheelchair."
"Not much," Lucielle admitted. "He just said that he wanted to overthrow Shirune... he didn't really specify how. Neither did Oryn, really. I... I think I can be of some use to the cause, though. I'm a doctor, so I can look out for people that Shirune has had hurt, or older people that might remember the time before. There might be a few people with information who the police overlook... I don't know how much use I'll be, but I'll try." She glanced around, trying to catch sight of anyone lingering around who might have heard what she had said. She saw no one, and relaxed slightly. "Also... if need be, I can... I can hurt people. But I'm a doctor, not a fighter. That would be a complete last resort. Is that OK...?"
|

Atom smiled bitterly. "You needn't worry about fighting and hurting people. I can do more than enough of that for both of us if I have to. It is perfectly ok for you not to hurt people."
For a miment she was silent. Then she added, "I think that you looking for people who have been hurt by Shirune, and talking to theolder peple is a good idea. As a doctor, I'm sure it would be easier for you to talk to such people than it would be for me. My job at the moment is to talk to people too, so I guess I'll have to work out how I'm supposed to do that. And honestly," she added, "I think you'll be more use in this than me. I really do."

Cole opened his mouth to make further demands of the guard, but Clark ignored him, focused instead at staring at the guard with a puzzled frown on his face. "Wait a minute..." he murmured, "Jeff? Jeffrey Bates? So this is what you did with your life after graduating? You had so much potential..."
((If it's not been said, Clark's an English (or whatever the native language of this universe is I suppose) teacher, probably for middle or early high school grades. What relationship he had with this guard/student is entirely up to you.))

Jeff frowned, looking at Clark closely in an attempt to recognise him. When he did, his eyes widened. "Mr Evans...?" He stared at him, shaking his head in disbelief. "My English teacher's a non. I don't believe it." He glanced at the gun - and at the person holding it - for the briefest of moments before he scowled. "So there are nons in the schools, teaching kids, making them think that they can be anything they want when the only jobs that a guy can get are directly linked to the Empire. It's disgusting. No one will let you in a school again now - if anyone had known that you weren't human no one would have listened to you. I wouldn't have listened to you."
Lucielle smiled awkwardly, not wanting to try to comfort Atom when they both hardly knew each other. She tried to change the subject with as much tact as she could. "So are we just trying to make people turn against the Emperor? Create a movement to try to knock him off the pillar he's made for himself?" She paused, but continued before Atom could actually answer. "...Do you actually think it'll work - that we'll make a difference?"

"I don't know whether it'll work, but then, I haven't been out in the world to know much about such things. Before I came out...there wasn't anyone like Shirune around. But Oryn and Silas seem to think that it'll work, so I guess we'd better give it a shot. And I think that if we get even one or two people thinking differently, we'll have already made a difference. Not that I know how I'll convince anyone, being as bad in conversation as I am." Atom grinned. "But I suppose I have to learn to talk to people sometime, mustn't I?"

"Oh use your common sense Jeff. I thought you were a better student than thought. You really think teachers have any control anymore over what they have to teach? And as for being a non, just look at me. Do I really look that different from you? I'm about as average and normal as it gets. Please, just help me out of this place. I'm really am human, and I don't deserve to be here." Clark motioned behind him to Cole to lower the gun, trying to appear less threatening. With an obvious reluctance, Cole dropped the weapon to his side, still obviously ready to raise it again in an instant if he needed to.

"You will if Shirune orders you to," Oryn muttered, secretly hoping that Shirune would not be ordering Silas to do anything of the sort. Working with him was one thing; completely relying on him for mobility was quite another. "Painting over the flags could work..." He contemplated for a moment, then reached for the button to call a nurse. One poked her head through the door almost immediately, looking concerned. "I'm all right," Oryn told her. "Just wondering when I might be discharged...?" She thought for a minute. "You'd have to verify it with a doctor, but since you'll have access to medical care at headquarters and you're fairly young... I'd say you'll probably be able to go back to headquarters the day after tomorrow. Is that all you wanted to know?" "Um... any chance you could get me a laptop?" "Why do you want a computer?" "To pass the time?" "I'll see what I can do." She vanished, and Oryn allowed himself a small smile of triumph. "If I've got a computer, I can screw with Shirune's music files from here," he told Silas. "No reason to wait till we get back to headquarters."

Silas grinned. "Now that's a good idea. I knew you weren't as stupid as you look." After a few minutes the nurse returned, carefully placing the laptop on the table attached to the bed. Silas stared straight at the laptop with a frown on his lips, keeping a safe distance away from it. "Is there anything else you need?" the nurse asked, staring straight at Oryn. "No, go away," Silas said, not even looking in her direction. She left relatively quickly. "Do you think that you can mess with the files with that thing?" he asked doubtfully. "...Can you even work it in your condition?" He really didn't want to have to help Oryn work the laptop, or anything else.
"You're talking to me just fine," Lucielle pointed out quietly. "And you're definitely better at conversation than Silas is. It took him around a month to find out that accusing me of trying to kill him wasn't a good conversation starter." She rolled her eyes. "I don't know why I put up with him anymore. I should have kicked him out months ago..." She paused, averting her gaze to stare at her hands. "I hope you're right. But we need to keep ourselves safe. I'm guessing that you're hiding from the government too?"
Jeff watched Cole lower the gun before glancing back at Clark. "If I do help you escape, I'll be punished. I could have my pay docked... I might even be fired." He shook his head. "I can't lose this job, not for some teaching non-human. I can't."

"Yes, and yes," Oryn replied, flipping the laptop open and starting it up. "Let's see... staff hard-drive... restricted access... what's the password again? Oh, yeah..." He entered the password, muttering to himself as he scrolled through files, searching for the 'address' file. "Now, to find a recording of the old anthem somewhere... I'd guess Shirune's personal files is the likeliest place... hm..." He looked through the restricted files, then clicked on the one labeled "custodial". "Shirune's personal password... um... I think it's... nope, he must have changed it... aha! There we go. Let's see... 'overthrown'... music... there." He opened the file, then listened to the first few seconds with the volume very low. "That's it." He imported the file to 'address', edited thirty seconds of the Empire's anthem in before the old anthem, changed the file name, saved it, and deleted the old file. "That should do it."

Silas didn't look convinced, still looking at the laptop as though he expected it to suddenly attack him. "Just like that?" he said. "Shouldn't the Emperor have better security than-" He caught the look in Oryn's eye, and stared at him for a moment before a grin spread across his face. "You've done this before, haven't you? How many times have you hacked into Shirune's files?" He leaned a little closer to the laptop, craning his neck so that he could see the screen properly. "Have you ever found anything interesting? Weird little personal things that we could use against him?"

Atom thought of the fact that Shirune had tried to have her killed and smiled wryly. "You could say I'm hiding too, yes. Amd seriously, I'm shaking on the inside in case I say something wrong. I'm surprised I haven't messed up yet. All my conversations have ended badky for either me or the other person so far." She was curious about Silas and Lucielle, but she didn't dard to ask. She'd done ok so far, but it might be a good idea to get out of here before she said somethung wrong and they ended up trying to smash each other. "I'd better go," she said, standing up abruptly. Maybe we can meet agsin later to discuss progress."

Oryn grinned, glancing through the files. "Well, let's see. Aside from his apparent obsession with nice suits and sports cars and expensive wine and all that, which you would expect... he has this." Oryn opened a file and glanced through several pictures of animals--sleek, frightening-looking beasts that were exactly the sorts of animals one would expect Shirune to have pictures of, or even to put as a desktop picture. "Where was it?" Oryn clicked through a few more pictures, then found the one he was looking for. "Gotta love fluffy kittens... and he's got way too many recipes." Oryn opened another folder and scrolled down through several hundred different recipes, most of which he couldn't pronounce the names of. "I don't understand why he decided to become Emperor... he could have just been a chef. It would have been a much more productive life path..."

"Oh, alright," Lucielle said, staying sitting on the fountain's edge. "I'll... I'll call you if I hear anything, or I'll get Silas to. It was nice meeting you, Atom. Properly meeting you, I mean." She reached into her pocket and pulled out a piece of paper that she had prepared before. "That's my number," she said, giving it to Atom, "I already have yours, from Silas. So... see you soon." She waited until Atom had left before she got out her own phone and dialled Silas's number. She had left it long enough - she had to know that he was alright.
Silas smirked and mentally noted the picture of the kitten and the recipes. "Great. Thank you for more ammunition against our kind leader. Although, I'm not sure if repeating recipes over a loudspeaker is good enough to ruin an address... I might throw a few eggs at his head though. Scramble his brain a-" He was cut off by the sound of his phone ringing, and pulled it out of his pocket. He saw Lucielle's name, and frowned at it for a moment before looking around. Making sure that there was, in fact, a 'no mobile phone' sign in the room, he answered his phone, pinching his nose and changing his voice. "My sincerest condolences, but the person who owns this phone is dead. The phone itself has already been sold on the black market for an astounding price for belonging to the most powerful non-human in the history of the empire, and Shirune himself has-" "I hate you." Silas moved his hand and rolled his eyes. "Oh, come on. Couldn't you let me finish my speech?" "Don't you know how worried I've been?" "Not really, no. I thought you'd be celebrating, and maybe Shirune might have baked a cake for you." He grinned even though he knew she wouldn't understand the joke. "Why would I-" A sigh. "Silas, are you alright? I heard about the crash, and I-" "A few broken ribs, and I cut up my hands a little," he said airily. "No big deal, really." There was silence for a moment. "And Oryn?" "Considerably worse, but he's human. I'm actually quite surprised that he didn't die." He smiled encouragingly at Oryn, but frowned when he saw one of the nurses at the window, staring wide-eyed at his phone. "Did you want something?" he asked quickly, "because I think one of the nurses is going to fight me for my phone soon. That'll be interesting." "No... I just-" She paused, stopping herself, and Silas frowned. "You shouldn't use your phone in a hospital." "I don't care." The nurse was pushing open the door, and Silas sighed. "Bye, Luci. Keep an eye out for me at Shirune's address - I'll be the one throwing eggs at his head." "Silas-" He hung up on her, closed his phone and held his hands up in surrender to the nurse before turning to Oryn. "Told you humans were bigoted. They wouldn't say anything about my phone if I was a human too."

"You're really going to worry more over your pay than helping me? Do you even know what they did to me? What they will do if I stay here?" Clark pleaded. "Besides, we could always make it seem like I forced you into it. Or you can just forget this job and go find a better one... I just need your help getting out of here and that's all.

Jeff looked around the room for a moment, weighing up his options before he sighed. "Fine. I'll help you get out of here, but as soon as you're out of the experiment sector you're on your own." He glanced between his teacher and the gun in the invisible man's hands. "I can't lose this job, Mr Evans. I can't." He stood up, holding up his hands in the universal sign of surrender, and moved slowly towards the door. He pulled out his keycard and swiped it, moving out of the door and glancing over his shoulder to make sure that his teacher was following him. "The exit's on the right," he mouthed.
"Visiting hours are over," one of the nurses said haughtily, glaring at Silas. "I think you're ready to go back to headquarters, Mr Almaras." Silas looked up at her. "Please tell me I get a nice limo like the Emperor." The nurse gave him an exasperated look. "The hospital has paid for a taxi." He paused, contemplating, before he shrugged. "I suppose I can stand a taxi." He stood up, wincing as his broken ribs protested, and smirked at Oryn. "I'll get someone to bring you a balloon for company. And if I feel like it I might even start with the preparations for our little show." He left the hospital relatively quickly and climbed into the taxi, playing with his phone as he was driven back to headquarters. After what felt like an eternity the taxi pulled up just outside the headquarters, and Silas stepped inside, ready to face whatever repercussions his actions after the crash would have.

Atom hurried away from the park. She wasn't sure about working with this Lucielle person, especially after finding out that she was the one who'd known that Atlm had stolen the phone. Heh, she wasn't sure about any of this business. A strong part of her was tugging at her, telling her to throw this whole thing in and get out while she still could. After all, she had no guarentee that these guys weren't either going to hand her over to Shirune, or to use her and then toss her aside when she'd done their dirty work. The side of her that was interested in self preservation said to go while the going was good. But the other part of her said stay, the part of her that had made her get everyone out of the maze, even the people she didn't like. She didn t know about these people she was working with. She didn't know their motives, but what they told her was something that resonated deep inside her, something that she felt was right. And she couldn't just run away when she could be helping them, helping other people. She knew better than most what it was to be truly under Shirune's rule. And she wouldn't wish that on anyone. So she told that part of herself that wanted to run away to shut up, and set about thinking up ways to talk to people without seeming suspicious. Well, Lucielle was a doctor or something like that wasn't she? That was a job. So she'd be talking to people through her job. Maybe Atom should try and find a jpb where she could talk to people too. She'd had to take something low, something that would be under Shirune's radar. A volunteer job maybe? It was a start at any rate. She'd think about what she was going to say to people when she actually got a job. So, job search time. *** Amber Fox strode through the halls of the Emperor's headquarters. Getting in here had been the hard bit, what with all the false paperwork she'd needed. But hey, nothing a great investigator like herself couldn't manage. Getting stumped by a little thing like that was so not her style. Though she had to admit, she'd expected it to be harder to get in here. After all, this was the headquarters of the emperor himself. Then again, it was Amber trying to get in, and not many people ever managed to keep her out. So here she was, in disguise as Scarlett Winter, a bad girl guard, while laughing at the people who thought she was for real, and searching for that teacher guy, Clark Leaving your former teacher in a place like this was definitely not her style. True, she'd only had him for a year, before Aunt Lou got to her and all that but hey, she knew him, and she knew he was in trouble. And it was fun to break in here. Elli hadn't liked the idea, but Elli was boring. She never wanted Amber to have any kind of fun. Apparently breaking into the empecror's headwuarter's wasn't on Elli's list of 'safe' things to do. She knew he was here somewhere. She'd heard talk of experiments, or something like that possibly connected with him. So she'd come to check that out today. Could be fun. She might find out something too. Anything was good when you wanted to make plans. And that was when she saw him, the little guy in the hood, coming along the hall in the opposite direction to her. Wow he was small. She wasn't exactly huge, but he was definitely small. Someone needed to feed him a few more cupcakes, seriously.
