Oryn relaxed visibly once Silas had left the room. He didn't have to step so carefully now. "Explain his plan? No. He doesn't have one. I... can't imagine Silas having a plan." He paused. "But I have one. As for his chances of dying... it's possible, but I'll do what I can to protect him from his own stupidity. There's very little else that could hurt him, after all." He ran one hand through his hair, feeling suddenly tired. "I'm sorry... it's late. Do you have any tea?"
Shirune motioned for his guards to put on infrared glasses. "As I said, nothing shall be done to harm you. We'll just start out with basic information, comparing the height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, et cetera of you and Cole. We may choose to have you perform some physical tasks as well, and measure exertion levels. And the importance of this? Sir, you are a teacher. I am certain you are aware of the importance of learning, of discoveries. So, will you cooperate?"

Lucielle couldn't help but laugh at Oryn's words. "That's good enough for me, mister. I think we have some tea in, I'll just go get some." She stood up, glancing at the ceiling and sighing. "That man is incapable of thinking ahead. When you need it I'll show you the guest room - he can just take the couch. You're not uncomfortable sleeping around medical equipment, are you?" She moved into the kitchen, listening for an answer as she looked for a mug and a teabag. "Do you want a mug, or one of Silas's girly teacups?"

"It's the same... All of that... It's all the same between us. Well, physical tasks and exertion wouldn't be the same, but everything else... Height, weight and all..." Clark muttered in response. Maybe that would speed this process up a little at least. "And well, sure, I'm all for learning, but I'm just an English teacher I don't really think there many discoveries being made in my subject anymore... Plus I'm not really sure how I feel about being the one the discoveries are made on..." In his head he couldn't help but point out that there was hardly any learning that went on anymore. His position was only a formality, and his actual job was just to feed his students what the Empire wanted them to think.

"I'm fine with medical equipment," Oryn replied. He doubted that he'd be able to sleep much anyways--he rarely did. "I'll have a mug..." He tried to imagine Silas with a 'girly teacup', and decided this was too strange an image for his exhausted mind to absorb at the moment. He pulled out his phone and typed in Atom's number. He had decided it was better to memorize it than put it in his contacts; documentation was always risky. Quickly, he typed out a text. Keep an eye out for any non-humans or undercover rebels. Befriend them. We might be able to come by sometime tomorrow. Oryn. He hit send, deleted the text, then pocketed the phone, glancing up as Lucielle re-entered the room.
"Ah, fair enough points," Shirune said. "But your subject is not the only important one, and as for being the one on which the discoveries are made... that is unavoidable. But this relationship between you and Cole is deeply fascinating, scientifically. It would be greatly appreciated if you would allow some investigations." He paused, awaiting an answer.

Clark did his best to keep his face from flushing at the mention of the relationship between himself and Cole, but ultimately did not really succeed very well. He tried to remind himself that Shirune didn't mean his statement that way, and hopefully didn't even realize that their relationship existed at all beyond the physical connection between them. "I don't really get a choice, do I? Because if I do I'd really rather not looking any more into it actually... I'd rather just go home..."

Atom's phone beeped, pulling her out of her doze. Goodness, had she really dropped off? Picking up the phone she opened the new text message.
"Keep an eye out for any non-humans or undercover rebels. Befriend them. We might be able to come by sometime tomorrow"
Oryn, the assassin. She wasn't sure she wanted him and his friend to come by. One, Oryn had obviously tried to kill her before. And two, who knew what reinforcements they might bring? She'd have to be on her guard. If they were going to try springing any nasty surprised, then she wanted to be ready for them.
Atom hated being so suspicious. She hated not being able to trust these people who said that they were trying to bring Shirune down. If thing were different, if Oryn hadn't been ordered to kill her before, she might have trusted them. But life was too dangerous now, and she couldn't afford to trust anyone. And it was the not trusting that hurt worst of all.

Lucielle passed him the mug, sitting back down and smiling at him. "That's good. For some reason people are usually creeped out by the medical stuff... but there just isn't enough room for it all, you know? And if we went to the normal hospital then they would ask questions, and he would get scared, and-" She cut herself off, glancing at Oryn. "I was rambling, wasn't I? I'm sorry. It's just... we don't get many visitors. When the only people you can talk to are either asleep most of the time or are Silas, social skills kind of disappear..."

"It's alright," Oryn replied. "Not having..." His phone vibrated in his pocket. "One moment..." He pulled it out and looked at the text on the screen. Oryn? It was from Taru. Oryn glanced at the time, then replied. What are you doing awake at this hour? Couldn't sleep. Wanted to talk to you. I can in a couple minutes, okay? Ok... Oryn looked back over to Lucielle. "Not having visitors isn't always a bad thing, especially if you and... Ceil, right? If you're are hiding from the government, as I would assume." He paused. "Is he a relation of yours, or...?" He wasn't entirely sure he should ask, but he was curious about this person who seemed to have such an effect on Silas.
Shirune hesitated for an instant. Was there a way to say this tactfully? "Ah... that would be understandable, but unfortunately we cannot send you home immediately. The sooner we finish the experimentation, the sooner you may be able to go home, however." He hoped this would be enough to convince Clark to let them start experimentation. This interview was getting rather long and tedious.

Clark let out a heavy sigh and did his best to keep his unkind thoughts from showing on his face as he muttered a disappointed "fine," and then, "let's get this over with." Cole had the luxury of not having to hide his frustration and wasn't quiet at all as he grumbled several profanities about the man interviewing him, the Emperor and the Empire, not realizing of course that the man interviewing them and the Emperor were one and the same.

Lucielle's face fell and she averted her gaze. "Um..." She contemplated lying, as she had lied to everyone who had ever questioned her about the boy, but decided against it quickly. If Silas had decided that he trusted Oryn - or simply didn't see him as a threat - than she could do it too. "No, he's not a relative of mine. Or Silas's, as far as I know." She remembered the utterly deadpan look Silas had given her when she had asked if they were related in any way, but she didn't smile. "I... I found him. Both of them, Silas and Ceil." She considered stopping there, but it felt wrong to do so. Finding them, like someone would find a lost phone or something equally trivial was wrong. She glanced at Oryn, and knew that she didn't want to leave it like that. She needed to get it off her chest - the horror would just stay with her otherwise. "...They were half-dead, and I'm sure you know how hard it is to hurt Silas in any way. So you know how bad of a state they were in. The way it looked," the blood in the snow, "Silas had dragged Ceil about 12 feet before he'd collapsed." She paused, fisting her hands and slowing her breathing before she continued. "What do you do, when you find someone like that? There aren't any hospitals nearby, and... and they were nons. There's no way that couldn't be, if they were both still alive. If I had called an ambulance, the experiments could have killed them. So I tried to look after them myself. "Silas recovered quick, and as long as I've known him he's been that annoying little brat we all hate. But Ceil's injuries were more... permanent. And for months, he wavered between needing Silas at every waking moment to tell him that the world was real, and screaming at him to leave because it was all his fault. "He has to stay here. If we risk moving him we could be discovered, and if we lose his medication then it would be horrible... and Silas just stays because of him. I think he's just waiting for Ceil to say it isn't his fault. To get rid of the guilt that he's never had in his entire life." She shook her head. "Sorry. I-if you're done with your coffee, I'll show you your room. If that's alright."

Atom was getting bored of sitting in her apartment doing nothing and hiding away. It was even worse than being back in the maze. At least in the maze you could go out and fight for your life for entertainment. Here, if she went out and fought, it would be against Shirune's men, and that wouldn't end well, considering she was trying to keep a low profile.
So instead she decided to go to one of the public places and hang around in town for a little. The library sounded like a good place to go for a bit. No one would mind if she went and read a book in there for a while. that was where you went to read wasn't it? Sometimes she couldn't trust the information her brain gave her, seeing as she couldn't remember ever having been to a library.
A library did turn out to be a place full of books. Atom spent the first few moments just looking at all the shelves filled with books. There were so many of them, more than she had imagined. She selected a book at random and went to sit in one of the chairs scattered around the library, choosing one near the back so she didn't stick out so much.
"-Shirune."
Atom stopped reading the moment that word hit her ears. Who was talking about Shirune? Was someone here for her? Had she slipped up somewhere? She closed the book soundlessly and listened intently.
"Shh, keep your voice down," another voice said. "We don't need the cameras to pick up on this conversation. If news of this gets back to Shirune..."
"Point taken," said the first voice. "Considering how long it's taken to get this far, we really don't need our plan to get rumbled now."
"Exactly. Now, have you got the list of missing people? You said you had some information for me."
"Yes, but not much I'm afraid. Most information on the missing people is highly classified. I did get you the names of the most notable people though. I'll keep trying to find out what's happened to them, but I'm not confident that I'll find anything."
"Just do your best. We need to know as much about this stuff as we can if we're to make any kind of move against Shi- the top man."
Atom sat as if turned to stone. They were talking about making a move against Shirune. They could be rebels just like her. Maybe she might be able to get some help from them, and help them in return. Without giving herself time to think, she walked round the shelf to where the voices had come from. Two startled men stared at her.
"You men are planning to make a move against Shirune," Atom said, her voice low. "I think we might be able to help each other."

Oryn nodded and stood. "That's fine. I need to call my brother, anyways... see if he's alright..." A hint of worry crept into his voice. It was remarkably late for Taru to want to talk, and with the events of the past few days, he suspected something was up.
Shirune smiled. "Very good." He glanced at his wristwatch, then turned to the guards. "Escort these gentlemen to the laboratory and tell the scientists to begin. They know what they're doing. I have a meeting to get to in a few minutes." He turned on his heel and strode out of the room, leaving Clark and Cole to his guards. Several minutes later he arrived in a large meeting room, in which his Council of Advisers was seated around a large table. Shirune took the seat at the head of the table and cleared his throat. "The Emperor's annual address to the Empire is potentially the most important event of the year. I expect the collaboration of all of you to ensure that this speech is exactly what the people need to hear in order assuage any doubts they may have about the Empire's competence. Shall we begin?"

It took a while for the men to finally stop looking they were going to run away, and to listen to Atom. She hadn't had to work so hard at convincing people to believe her since she'd made difficult decisions in the maze. But they were listening. And now she could explain what she wanted.
"I know a couple of men who are supporting the same cause as you," Atom said, choosing her words very carefully. "They wish for the removal of the same person as yourself. I would like to offer you a chance to work with them for the common cause. It would be good for both groups if it were possible to work together. What do you say? Will you meet with the other group and at least discuss the possibility of working together?"

Lucielle left Oryn in his room, moving away from the door so that there was no chance of her overhearing his conversation. She didn't want to be rude, after all. She walked towards Ceil's room, where she was sure Silas was, about to tell him that he would have to take the couch. But when she did make it to the doorway, Silas was already asleep. Without even thinking about it she left the room, and returned with a blanket moments later. She made sure not to get too close to Silas, in case his senses woke him up, but made sure that it covered him completely before leaving. "You're way too nice to him," Ceil piped up, scaring her half to death. "So are you," Lucielle retorted. "You should have kicked him out." Ceil shrugged. "It's pretty hard to get rid of him." "Night, Ceil." "Night, Luci."
"Have I mentioned that I don't like libraries?" Silas said for the fourth time, eying the books distastefully from under his hood. After the argument regarding whether or not Silas had to come along - ending badly for both of them, as they decided if Shirune rang and Silas was unsupervised it could be a disaster for everyone - and the argument regarding who would drive - ending in Oryn's favour, as Silas's license had been revoked - Silas was in a bad mood. "Why are we in this section, again? I didn't think you were into these kind of books. In fact, if I'm honest, I didn't think you were into books. I was under the impression that most humans were too stupid to read." He didn't mention the fact that until two years ago he had had no idea how to read or write. Or even type a message into a phone. He looked around, bored, and saw a small group of people not too far away. He grinned, picturing the look on their faces if he showed his eyes. "I'm going over there," he told Oryn, striding over to the group. His steps slowed, however, when he recognised Atom. "Well," he said, appearing around the corner and leaning on one of the bookcases. "I didn't expect to see you here."

Atom spun around, all her senses on high alert all of a suddenly. Her fists balled automatically. Then she realised that she was just looking at Silas. Forcing herself to relax a little, she scowled at him before turning back to the men.
"As a matter of fact it appears that at least one of these men are here now. If you will excuse me, I shall go and speak to him for a moment."
She shot round the side of the bookcase, spinning round once again to face Silas from the other side. "What are you doing here in the library? I wouldn't have picked you for a book lover. Are you stalking me?"

Silas looked at her in confusion before laughing. "Yes, I'm stalking you. Because I don't have anything better to do with my time than follow paranoid little humans around." He peered around her so that he could see the two humans she had been addressing. "So you've been talking about me? I hope it's all good. After all, we're comrades now." He dragged out the word, hoping that he was unnerving her just a little. "And if you've been saying bad things to them about me and the Emperor, then I think I'll have to get involved." He hoped that he hadn't made himself sound like an idiot, but he couldn't properly question her about what she had said when they were standing so close to a camera.

Atom folded her arms, refusing to let him unnerve her. "Better paranoid than dead. And no, we're not comrades. If it wasn't for your excellent connection with the Emperor I doubt I'd have anything to do with your or Oryn. But as it is, these people are just as loyal to our 'beloved' Emperor as you are. As to anything about them, you'll have to ask them yourself for I only just met them."

When Clark and Cole reached the laboratory, there was already a small group of scientists waiting for them. There were two weighing scales, two height measures and a heartrate monitor. All of the scientists were wearing infra-red glasses. The scientists measured Clark and Cole's height and weight, making notes as they did so, and hooked Cole up to a heartrate monitor. They scribbled down many notes about his heartbeat and systolic and diastolic pressure, and prepared to take some of both Clark and Cole's blood. "There has to be some sort of difference between your blood," one scientist said with gusto. "If his blood is invisible but has all of the properties of blood, if his blood is visible once extracted, if it contains some qualities that could explain his abnormal existence... we must compare this, and wait for the results. Once the results come through, we can experiment more, or let you go home." He moved to Clark first, syringe at the ready and guards at the door in case Cole reacted badly.

Clark and Cole's height and weight were identical, as were their heartrates, blood pressures, everything, precisely the same between the two of them. Clark muttered a quiet "I told you so. We're the same person," as yet another measurement came out the same. He tensed but didn't object as one of the scientists pressed the needle into his skin and filled a few vials with blood. He handed the vials off to another of the scientists and then prepared a second syringe for Cole. He kept his eyes alternating between watching Clark and watching the scientist. After he found the right vein, he pressed the tip of the needle against Cole's arm. However, as he moved to break the skin, to actually draw blood, it was the needle that broke instead. Cole smirked a little, somewhat pleased that his invincibility still applied. The scientist frowned and quickly got another needle. This one also snapped against Cole's skin rather than penetrating it. Cole was snickering a little, although Clark just glanced somewhat nervously between Cole and the scientist. What would they do if they couldn't get the blood samples they wanted? He knew there had to be a way for them to get what they wanted, but he also was positive he wouldn't like it.

Oryn pulled the last of the books Taru had requested off the shelf, and glanced up to see where Silas had gone. He caught sight of him talking to Atom and two unfamiliar men by another bookshelf, and went over to see what was going on. He drew close in time to hear most of their conversation. "Silas, relax. We're not stalking you, Atom. I just had to pick some things up from the library. But since you're here also..." He trailed off for a moment. "You seem to have found some men with goals similar to ours. However, I don't think this is a particularly good place to discuss such things..." he resisted the urge to look at the security camera. "If we intend to make any plans, we should go somewhere else. I need to check these out first, though..."

Atom shrugged. "Fine, we'll go to my place, seeing as you two already know where it is. I'll meet you there with these two guys, if I can persuade them that meeting you two is a good idea. Hopefully Silas didn't spook them too much. That could be awkward."
She disappeared round the side of the bookcase, and, after a short argument, convinced the two men to come with her to her apartment. She mainly convinced them by pointing out that they were two men against one girl. Of course she conveniently forgot to tell them she was an enhanced girl who could take them both on a win. Somehow that fact didn't seem relevant right now.

Once Atom opened the still-slightly-broken door to her apartment Silas strolled inside and sat on her couch, just like last time. He waited for Oryn to enter the room and looked around. The two men were lingering close to the door, waiting for an opportunity to leave. Silas grinned at them but didn't lower his hood. There was a time for intimidation, and it wasn't now. "So, everyone's here. I think we should just skip the introductions, as one, I don't particularly care who you are, and 2, if you aren't going to join us or seek to betray us, then knowing the names of your victims make things a little more complicated." He paused for a moment, letting the threat sink in. "We are currently arranging Shirune's downfall, as I'm sure Atom's already told you. And once his power has been taken away, we will kill him. I'll see to that myself, unless there's a queue of people who will make it more interesting." He saw their uneasy glances as he mentioned Shirune's murder and rolled his eyes. "This place isn't bugged, if that's what you're worried about. I managed to convince the security team to disable the cameras, therefore saving electricity and the planet and all that crap." Really he had just complained about keeping the cameras online in an abandoned apartment so much that they had just turned them off to make him shut up, but at least he had spent his time before finding Gage productively. "The Emperor is going to be giving his speech soon. We plan to disrupt this." He hadn't actually mentioned it to Oryn - he had only just remembered - but he was sure that Oryn wouldn't be against it. "So, what kind of movement have you already done? How is having you on our side going to benefit us?"

The two men looked a bit nervous at Silas's speech. Atom watched them as they look at each other. Seriously, didn't Silas know the first thing about handling people? You definitely did not want to scare them so much that they didn't want to cooperate.
"What sort of progress have you guys managed to make so far?" she said. Hopefully they'd respond better to someone actually being nice to them.
"Well, so far we've been trying to gather records. There's a heap of interesting statistic lying around if you know where to look for them. That's what we've been doing so far, gathering statistics, and hunting down information on missing people. We've got a network of people in the right areas to give us the basic information and the access to records that we need, but it's slow going. We can help you in that kind of area."

"So you've been looking for information," Silas said. He made sure that he sounded more condescending than disappointed. "People disappearing, an increase in factories, that sort of thing?" He leaned back on the couch, giving them an unamused look. "You do know that most of the information you get will have already been changed? That the actual, original censuses and birth certificates and other information are not in public places but in the headquarters? Or did you assume that there wasn't a hundred-strong force dealing precisely with censorship?" He shook his head in disbelief. "Let me guess. It's slow going because you couldn't find anything." He sighed dramatically and turned to Oryn. "It seems that we are the only ones who can actually do anything."

The two men didn't seem to know quite how to take this fresh outburst of Silas's, ridiculing their work. They looked at each other, and then at Atom, before finally transferring their gaze to their feet. Atom was personally furious. How dare Silas! If these men wouldn't, or couldn't stand up for themselves, then she'd do it for them. She wasn't going to have all her hard work undone by a dwarf who didn't know when to keep his mouth shut.
"It's sooooo lovely to see how much you value the chance to gain some allies Silas," she said, her voice loaded with sarcasm. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you didn't want help overthrowing Shirune. In fact, by the way you're apparently trying to get rid of these guys, I'd almost believe you were happy being Shirune's pet non-human." Her voice hardened. "These guys don't have the opportunities you do. They're not thick as thieves with the Emperor. They have to do their best from the outside. If you want any help, you'd better learn to keep your big mouth shut and stop insulting the work that other people do."
She glared at Silas, her vision slightly tinged with red. He'd better behave himself better otherwise she'd be leaving the room to calm down. Actually, leaving the room was starting to sound like a great idea. Stupid Silas.

Fury overcame him and he stood up, getting right in front of her. As he realised that she was taller than him he only got angrier. "I am not his pet," he snarled, his fingers clenching into fists. But what else was he, really? The killer with the strange eyes, the aberration who was no longer scary or dangerous but just minorly irritating. Not equal with the humans, supervised so that he didn't do anything stupid. More powerful than them all, yet unable to use his powers. Tame. "You think you're such a great person, standing up for these idiots who are wasting their time, but what are you doing to help, really?" He was fighting back his fury, trying in vain to keep himself from screaming in her face, and could feel himself grinning. "Nothing. You can't do anything. Everything that makes you special comes from a bottle, a little experiment that went better than they hoped. If I'm a pet, then you're a lab rat." Glaring at her, close enough that she could see his eyes even though his hood was still up, he sat back down. "Maybe I don't want any help, but I need it. And if stating the obvious annoys you, forgive me if I don't give a damn. Or don't. Just shut the hell up, and if you have to speak make sure it's something that's actually worth my time."

"And who's wasting their time if they don't get help? At least I've been trying to help you, but you know what? Maybe I don't want to help with your rebellion. Maybe I don't want to work with you. Maybe I hate being a lab rat without a memory of a real life. And maybe I just want to punch your nose into the back of your head."
The red in her vision was thickening. Any minute now she'd lose it. She had to get out of here, calm down, before she did some real damage. That was the last thing she needed.
"You know what? I'm through. I tried trusting you, and this is all I get. I'm not going to be a part of your plans Silas. You can do this on your own, because I quit. I'm not working with someone who treats me and my efforts like dirt. If I wanted that treatment I'd go back to Shirune. So you can do whatever you want, because I'm outta here."
She headed to the door, fists clenched tightly. She couldn't trust anyone it seemed. She'd be better off on her own than trying to work with Silas.

"Oh no you don't!" He grabbed her, spinning her around before she could reach the door. "I risked my head letting you live. I'm not risking you leaving and betraying us, rat. Not on my life." He squeezed her wrist threateningly, knowing that he would leave an ugly bruise. "You can't quit something that hasn't even began. And if you try then more assassins will be sent after you, and your hope for a 'real life' will be dead, as will you. Or maybe I'll just kill you myself, right here and now." He released her.

"Betraying you? Who'd I betray you to? Every who'd be interested also wants me either in a lab, or dead." The angry stretngth was pulsing through Atom now. But still she held herself in check. "I can quit anything I like Silas, at any time. Send assassins after me if you want. I can hope for a real life, but I already know I won't get one. My chances for that were ruined long before I can remember."
She pushed past Silas and made it through the door this time. She had to calm down, had to find a place away from here where she could fight to anger. "Don't taunt me with things you don't understand Silas. At least you have a memory. At least you aren't under a death sentence. And at least you aren't a lab rat like me. Just be grateful for your good fortune and leave me alone."

Gage stood quietly in the corner of the lab. His infrared glasses made his eyes hurt. It wouldn't help though to let them know he was here. Not after he took all the precautions of making it look like he slipped out of the building into the parking garage. He had slipped into the trunk of some nondescript looking car before he slid back out and into a supply room. It was rather a pain to change his appearance, adjusting it little by little so that he looked completely different. It was even harder to do so when he didn't have a mirror.
Gage had weighed his options of leaving and staying here. If it looked like he slipped out, then they wouldn't look for him here right? Especially not in this room, with the man and his invisible companion occupying their attention.
He almost snickered when the second needle broke, but held his amusement back. Part of him tensed as he knew what would come after this. Even if they got their blood, they'd just look these two up and continue their experiments. Best case scenario was that they just forgot about them, like they did for a while with Gage. Worst case.. Gage shivered in spite of himself.
He stepped closer to the two subjects, his head pounding through the infrared glasses as he passed a third needle to the scientist. He just had to make it seem like he knew what he was doing. At least for a little while, before he could leave this place for good. Hopefully, it would be in flames then.
